Catalan Folk Dancing Festival

Catalan Folk Dancing Festival

The Fira is finally over - ten days of Fairground, Fireworks and Flies. The Fly being the symbol of St Narcis Girona’s City Saint. This year politics put the kybosh on anything to do with youth.

A couple of weeks back I was temporarily trapped in La Taverna a bar on Placa U’d’Octobre renamed from Placa Constitucio as a slight scuffle broke out between those forces who impose the disorder of the system on people - those with the 'I am a Fascist' badges on the Uniforms (Someone really does need to redesign that logo for them) and the youth of today. So it was shutters down and an extra drink ordered for the longer than usual English conversation session with Marta, my Comedy sketch English to Catalan translator.

Anyway with the Sant Narcis Festival over it’s onto Christmas. The Christmas street lights look like they have already been put up ready for the 1st December switch on.

In a world where in 15 years time 60% of people won’t really need to work these lengthy holidays increasingly look like they make sense. Needless to say the powers that be in Girona are looking to shorten the end of October holiday because no one, not even Barcelona and Madrid, have ten days festivities for their patron saints. Let’s hope the slippery slope towards the ‘drop dead at work and like it’ approach favoured in the US and UK isn’t started on just as everyone needs to be going in the opposite direction.
